In Bloom
Ceramic sculpture, mixed media
Unit 4 Art Making and Exhibiting
Molly Welch’s ceramic sculpture series on the transformative power of time and newfound clarity, In Bloom works as an autobiographical reflection on entering adulthood and maturity, leaving behind dark and difficult times.
Each bust represents a stage in the healing, beginning with Point of Impact, where the scattering pieces represent catastrophe and devastation, Reconstruction represents the industrial feeling of rebuilding a foundation, a sense of self, Healing, a “shrine” to the experiences made possible via this journey and dedication to regrowth, and the final piece named Commencement, meaning beginning, marking the start of a new life of health and self-love.
Welch’s use of colour and shape represents “levels” or “phases” of development, with an aesthetic quality of freshness, clarity and visibility unfolding as the series goes on.
Welch felt that the artform of ceramics was best to portray these ideas, as they are more tactile and human, allowing the various multimedia additions work to define the core significances of each bust.
